Leadership

Leadership

I build technology, lead teams, solve problems and add value.

Recruiters and employers need confidence quickly. Here is what over 30 years of technology leadership looks like in practice.

Executive summary

Technology leadership that delivers.

I help organisations build the systems, teams and delivery capability needed to turn technology into business value — from pioneering early online insurance platforms to leading cloud transformation, engineering teams, cybersecurity initiatives and AI adoption. My approach is practical: understand the problem, question the assumptions behind it, then build something that actually works.

What I do

Areas of expertise

CTO / CIO leadership

Setting technology strategy, running engineering organisations, and being accountable for delivery.

Engineering teams & delivery

Building and scaling teams, improving delivery capability, and getting software shipped reliably.

Cloud, security & AI

Cloud migration and architecture, practical cybersecurity, and pragmatic adoption of AI tooling.

Architecture & transformation

Designing systems that last, and leading the organisational change needed to get there.

Practical problem solving

Getting into the detail when it matters, and knowing when not to.

Aviation & product

Practical software for real-world operational use, and independent product development including SpeedWise.

Selected achievements

A track record built over three decades.

  • Built what was likely one of the earliest B2B insurance quoting systems.
  • Designed and implemented a programming language.
  • Early AI and machine learning experiments in the 1980s and 1990s, long before either became fashionable.
  • Modern security work including post-quantum encryption and passwordless authentication.
  • Shipped SpeedWise, an independent iPhone app, end to end.
How I work

Collaborative, practical, and grounded in delivery.

I don’t work as a lone inventor. Good technology leadership means building teams that can think for themselves, questioning assumptions before committing resource, and staying close enough to the work to know when something isn’t right. That same instinct to ask “what if we’ve been looking at this the wrong way?” runs through both my leadership work and my Re-Thinking projects.
